Gitaristene Thurston Moore og Lee Ranaldo hadde erfaring fra henholdsvis The Coachmen og The Flucts, og begge hadde vært med på innspillinger som deler av Glenn Brancas mange gitarorkestre. Branca komponerte symfonier for elektriske gitarer (med rytmeseksjon), og deler av dette materialet høres bemerkelsesverdig friskt ut i dag. Kim Gordon kom til New York med kunstskoleutdanning fra San Francisco i bagen, og var utover 80-tallet kunstkritiker i magasinet Artforum parallelt med løpet til SY. Med trommeslager Richard Edson ble Sonic Youth et band, og de gjorde sin først konsert på No Wave-festivalen New York Noise Fest i 1981, der Moore var en av initiativtakerne. Moore, Ranaldo og Gordon var med på Glenn Brancas Symphony No. 3, før SY debuterte med en selvtitulert EP sluppet på Brancas label Neutral Records. Albumdebuten for SY kom i 1983 med Confusion Is Sex, også den på Neutral, og den faller på mange måter inn i No Wave-ideologien.
Tekstmessig utvikler SY seg videre gjennom beskrivelser av groteske mellommenneskelig forhold i forskjellige sosiale kontekster, mer abstrakte og tilslørte bilder, og noen ganger tekster med politisk brodd. Gordons...
