Linn Carin Dirdal: The 9 best of 09

grooves Linn Carin Dirdal har valgt seg ut disse platene som sine favoritter fra 2009:

The Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

CD (Domino)
Intricate rhythms, neat arrangements and lush vocals make this piece of Brooklyn pop one of 2009's musical gems. One only has to listen to perhaps the pop hit of the year, Stillness Is The Move, to realise that Dave Longstreth and co are in a league of their own.

Favourite tracks: Temecula Sunrise, Stillness Is The Move, Fluorescent Half Dome

tUnE-yArDs - BiRd-BrAiNs

CD (4AD / Marriage)
Behind tUnE-yArDs lurks New Englander Merrill Garbus, a ukulele-playing loopmeister with lo-fi aesthetics and plenty of heavy drum beats and layered vocals up her sleeve. A unique blend of folk, hip hop and African rhythms, this is R&B the way it should be anno 09.

Favourite tracks: Sunlight, Hatari

Duke Garwood - He Was a Warlock

CD (Fire)
Based on his sultry blues beats, you may be forgiven for thinking that Duke Garwood was raised in the deep South. Son House and Captain Beefheart are traceable in the Londoner’s distorted vocals wrapped in fuzz, feedback and growling riffs, yet it’s Garwood’s own raw and distinctive sound that leaves you baffled and hungry for more.

Favourite tracks: Havin Had You, Each Man Sparkles

Fever Ray - Fever Ray

CD (Rabid)
Royksopp collaborations and The Knife albums, they’re all testaments of Karin Dreijer’s golden touch. So perhaps it wasn't the biggest of surprises that the mask-wearing Swede’s solo debut turned out to be yet another musical triumph. As Fever Ray Dreijer’s created a personal and demanding universe where the gothic undertones shed new life on everyday musings about watering the neighbour's plants...

Favourite tracks: If I Had a Heart, Dry and Dusty, Now’s The Only Time I Know

Deradoorian - Mind Raft EP

CD (Lovepump United)
With her solo debut, Dirty Projector Angel Deradoorian created a universe unrestricted by conventions, rules or genres. Mind Raft is an amalgamation of everything from indie, r'n'b, folk and world that still somehow manages to sound focused and homogenous.

Favourite tracks: High Road, Moon

Mastodon - Crack the Skye

CD (Reprise)
The Atlanta foursome chose 2009 as the year to inject their part-metal part-prog with a healthy dose of pop antics. Hard drums, killer guitar riffs and ridiculously catchy choruses make this the album Mars Volta should have made.

Favourite tracks: Oblivion, Quintessence, The Last Baron

Hudson Mohawke - Butter

CD (Warp)
Following a string of okay singles, it all seemed to gel on the Glaswegian producer’s debut album. With a hint of Dilla, a good pinch of smooth RnB and a lot more pop than ever before, Hudson Mo's cut-up hip hop beats are as danceable as they are shrewd.

Favourite tracks: Rising 5, Twistclip Loop, FUSE

Dâm-Funk - Toeachizown

CD (Stones Throw)
Tracks bathing in synths and dripping of sultry smoothness - Toeachizown's DIY undertones are reminiscent of Cody Chestnutt’s mighty-fine The Headphone Masterpiece from 2002. With his debut release, the Stones Throw-signed New Boogie poster boy picked off where slick 80s RnB left it. And what a feast it is.

Favourite tracks: Let’s Take Off (Far Away), Fantasy, 10 West, Hood Pass Intact

Diverse artister - Open Strings: Early Virtuoso Recordings From The Middle East, and New Responses

CD (Honest Jons)
After having released the astonishing Give Me Love: Songs Of The Brokenhearted, Baghdad, 1925-1929 in 2008, Hones Jon’s followed up with another stellar world music archive compilation in 2009. Open Strings is a collection of improvised Middle Eastern recordings from the 1920s together with contemporary responses from artists such as Six Organs of Admittance and Richard Bishop. A mesmerising piece of musical history.

Favourite tracks: Taxim Nahawand Wahda – Sami Chawa, Husseini Taxim – Nechat Bey, Kurduli Hidjazkiar Taxim – Kementchedi Alecco, Mavaraounnahr – Abdul Hussein Khan Shahnazi
