Gjesteliste: Japandroids

10 records I really got into in 2010 (by Dave - the drummer)
I actually didn't really listen to that much stuff that was released in 2010. So I thought I'd offer a list of the stuff that I discovered and loved this year. Some of it came out in 2010, some of it came out a while ago...
1. Beach House - Teen Dream (2010)
This is probably the record I listened to the most this year. I never really got into Beach House on their first two records, and then all of a sudden everything clicked when I heard this album. That voice is beautiful of course, but what really grabs me is the restraint in the songwriting and the way they let songs quietly build and suck you in.
2. Apollo Ghosts - Mt. Benson (2010)
Best band in Vancouver. I loved their first record Hastings-Sunrise, and this one is probably twice as good. It bounces between twee, weirdo rock, and art punk, sometimes all within the same song!
3. Leonard Cohen - Live at the Isle of Wight (recorded 1970, released 2009)
I bought this DVD on a whim and it was the beginning of my obsession with Leonard Cohen. I've listened to his music non-stop since I bought this record late last year, and read both of his novels. What an amazing artist.
4. The Gun Club - Fire of Love (1981)
This record is wild, loose, and pretty much perfect. I wish I could have seen this band play live.
5. Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One (2000)
My girlfriend loves this band, so I've listened to their records quite a bit, but I really got into them this year. No one sounds anything like Sleater-Kinney, and you can't say that about many bands.
6. The Sadies - In Concert Volume One (2006)
Brian has been a huge fan of the Sadies for the past few years and this year was the one where I finally jumped on board. Their new record Darker Circles is great, but this live record is absolutely mind blowing.
7. The Bats - Daddy's Highway (1987)
A friend gave me this record back in January and I've listened to it regularly all year. Great, simple, heartfelt songs. Good for long drives.
8. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues (2004)
Nick Cave is the kind of artist who, rather than being inspiring, makes you question why you even try to make music. I listened to Grinderman 2 a lot, which actually came out in 2010, but this is the record of his I really discovered and got into this year.
9. The National - High Violet (2010)
I listened to this record a lot over the summer. It's a beautiful piece of work, and to my ears sounds like the most fully realized expression of what the National are capable of.
10. Abner Jay - Folk Song Stylist (re-released in 2009)
A friend played this record for me when I was over at his house and I was captivated instantly. The songs have such intensity and such a raw beauty to them. You really feel them.
